One day in Oakland I was walking down Howe Street and was stuck by the after images of dead leaves on the sidewalk They reminded me of the shadow images left in Hiroshima after the bomb was dropped.  Around the same time I was in a store in Berkeley and was taken with Joss paper that is burned at Chinese funerals as an offering to ancestral spirits.  It is a Taoist tradition.  Around the winter solstice in 2011, I created an installation at my studio with photos, joss paper and votive candles capturing images of death, light and shadow.
